Dr. Amanda Cavaness
Dr. Amanda M. Cavaness has served in public education for more than twenty years. A former second-grade teacher and instructional coach, she has served as principal of The Dr. Jerry Hamm Early Learning Center in Coffeyville, Kansas, since 2015. Her leadership centers on providing high-quality early childhood education through strong family partnerships, professional collaboration, and a deep respect for the vital work of teachers.
She earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy from the University of Kansas in 2022. Her earlier degrees include a Master of Science in Education from Newman University, where she was recognized as the Outstanding Graduate for the ESOL Curriculum & Instruction Program, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Pittsburg State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Through the shared dedication of Dr. Cavaness and her team of exceptional teachers, the Early Learning Center became the only school in Kansas recognized as a Model Professional Learning Community at Work. This recognition reflects the collaborative spirit and collective effort of the ELC staff, families, and community partners willing to work together to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow. Dr. Cavaness also contributes to statewide early learning initiatives. She serves on the Board of Directors for Child Care Aware of Kansas and was a member of the team that developed the Pre-Kindergarten Guide for the Kansas State Department of Education.
Dr. Cavaness is passionate about helping young children build strong academic, social-emotional, and physical foundations. As she says, “We are in the business of making dreams come true… one preschool story at a time.”
She and her husband, Josh—a flight medic and longtime firefighter—have two children, Audrey and Jefrey. Outside of school, Dr. Cavaness enjoys watching old movies, listening to jazz music, and spending time with her family, which includes an adorable goldendoodle named Leo.
